The Second Star was composed in 1990 for the Humboldt State University Brass Chamber Music Workshop. It is dedicated to artist and trumpeter Jim Tidwell, who designed and drew the baroque trumpeter logo for Premiere Press. 211 or 202. Optional tuba part makes it a quintet (#1039). A trumpet quartet in its original form (#1017), it is also available for trombone quartet or quintet (#1066) and tuba quartet or quintet (#1115).
